As newcomers continue building their lives in Canada, digital safety and online awareness have become essential parts of everyday life. From online banking and job applications to immigration communication and social media use, people rely heavily on digital platforms every single day. Unfortunately, cybercriminals are also becoming more active and are increasingly targeting newcomers through scams, fake emails, fraudulent job offers, identity theft, and misleading online advertisements. To help address these growing concerns, Tombolo Multicultural Festival in partnership with We Care Foundation is organizing a highly informative and practical

“Cyber-Security and Digital Privacy Skills Training for Newcomers”
Monday, May 25, 2026
6:30 PM to 8:00 PM
Location: Tombolo Office
25 Kenmount Road, Suite 207, St. John’s,
Newfoundland and Labrador. For participants who are unable to attend in person, a virtual Zoom option will also be available, making the session accessible to a wider community audience. This free community training session aims to equip newcomers with important digital safety knowledge and practical skills that can help protect them and their families from online threats and cyber fraud.
Many newcomers unknowingly become victims of online scams because they are still learning how different systems work in Canada. For example, some people receive fake emails pretending to be from banks, immigration offices, delivery companies, or even the Canada Revenue Agency asking them to click suspicious links or provide personal information. Others may come across fake job postings on Facebook or WhatsApp promising easy work permits or high-paying jobs, only to later realize they were scams asking for money or sensitive documents. There are also incidents where people use unsecured public WiFi at airports, shopping malls, coffee shops, or libraries, allowing hackers to access personal information, passwords, or banking details. Through this training session, participants will learn how to identify these common online threats, avoid phishing emails, recognize fake websites, and protect their personal data while using the internet.
The training will also focus on practical digital privacy skills such as creating strong passwords, using two-factor authentication (2FA), securing social media accounts, safely browsing online, and understanding how cybercriminals manipulate people using fear, urgency, or false promises.
Participants will gain useful real-life knowledge that can immediately help them become safer and more confident internet users. In today’s modern world where almost every service including banking, healthcare, education, employment, and communication depends on technology, digital literacy and cybersecurity awareness are no longer optional, they are essential life skills.
This initiative reflects the continued commitment of Tombolo Multicultural Festival and We Care Foundation to support newcomers through education, community empowerment, and practical settlement resources. Community members are strongly encouraged to attend this valuable session on May 25, register for free using the QR code provided on the event poster, and take advantage of this important opportunity to learn how to better protect themselves and their families in today’s rapidly changing digital world.
