Every Saturday afternoon in St. John’s, immigrants and refugees gather not in a classroom, but in conversation and that makes all the difference.

There is something quietly powerful about sitting down with a stranger and simply talking. No textbooks, no red pens, no pressure just words finding their way across the table. That is precisely the spirit behind a new program launched in St. John’s, one that is offering newcomers to Canada something they often need most: a place to be heard.

The Tombolo Multicultural Festival Newfoundland & Labrador, in partnership with the We Care Foundation of Newfoundland & Labrador, has introduced an Informal English Language Learning program for newcomers a free, welcoming weekly gathering known as the Conversation Circle. Held every Saturday from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. at the Tombolo Office on 25 Kenmount Road, Suite 207, the sessions are open to immigrants and refugees of all backgrounds and English levels.

For many who have arrived in Canada with hope in their hearts but hesitation on their tongues, language can feel like both a bridge and a barrier. Formal classes have their place, but there is a gap a space between the grammar lesson and the grocery store, between the textbook dialogue and the real conversation at work. The Conversation Circle is designed to live in that gap, offering a relaxed, human environment where newcomers can speak freely, make mistakes without fear, and grow in confidence week by week.

The program is funded by Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC), reflecting a broader federal recognition that integration is not merely a matter of paperwork and policy it is built, person by person, through community and connection. Language, after all, is not just a tool for communication. It is the key to belonging.

Organizers invite anyone who is new to Canada and eager to practice their English to walk through the door at Suite 207 and take a seat at the table. Registration is completely free, and all are welcome. As the seasons change and newcomers continue to make Newfoundland their home, the Conversation Circle stands ready one Saturday at a time.

Tombolo Multicultural successfully completed filming for a new episode of the Variety Show in Newfoundland and Labrador for Rogers TV. The episode features Liliya and highlights Ukrainian culture at a Ukrainian food shop located in Village Mall.

The full filming team was present on site, and the shoot was completed smoothly in a collaborative and positive environment. Everyone worked together effectively, which helped capture strong and meaningful content for the program.
